OVERLORD ECHOES:
THE D-DAY JOURNEY THEN AND NOW

During the 65th commemoration of D-Day, the National D-Day Memorial will present Overlord Echoes, a two-day conference June 4-5th, 2009. With the goal of recognizing our D-Day veterans, preserving their stories, and sharing the lessons and legacy of their accomplishments, Overlord Echoes will showcase the best D-Day scholarship and research with opportunities to hear about
D-Day firsthand from those who lived it. Combining story with history, experience with insight, Overlord Echoes promises to be the only gathering of its kind in the nation.

Overlord Echoes kicks off with a two-day conference at nearby Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, featuring authors, scholars, and veteran speakers on a host of D-Day topics including, the role of medics at D-Day, women and the war, African-American units in the invasion, the ground assault, and D-Day from the air and sea.

Authors and scholars Alex Kershaw and Dr. Gerhard Weinberg will serve as keynote speakers for the conference. Kershaw is the author of numerous best-sellers on WWII and D-Day, including The Few, The Bedford Boys, The Longest Winter, and most recently Escape from the Deep. Dr. Weinberg is a German-born American historian and author of numerous books on the origins and course of the war, including The Foreign Policy of Hitler’s Germany and A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II. Weinberg is the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Kershaw and Weinberg will place D-Day in its historical context and humanize the epic scale of the engagement.
