Award winning author and military historian John C. McManus will discuss his book The Dead and Those About to Die during a special lecture inside the Memorial’s Bobbie G. Johnson Pavilion on April 27. McManus’s riveting account of the 1st Infantry Division’s ordeal on Omaha Beach on D-Day brings to light the role of the Big Red One in Normandy. The veteran Division had already fought its way from North Africa to Sicily, earning a reputation as warriors on the front lines. On D-Day, they would face one of their most challenging missions yet. Discover the history of the Big Red One as told by McManus who interviewed dozens of veterans to compile one of the most complete narratives of the 1st Infantry Division in Normandy and their march into history on June 6, 1944. The lecture will be followed by a book signing. Books are available for purchase in the Memorial’s gift store or at the Memorial’s online gift store.
